Why Impugn?

Many in the right-wing blogosphere, afraid to be viewed as crackpots, have conducted a campaign to impugn anyone who dare question Obama's citizenship, his "certificate of live birth", or the process by which natural-born-citizenship might be verified.

The vigor with which they seek to marginalize is interesting, since mere silence is enough to protect them from accusations of crack-pottery.

I take offense when someone accuses me of being no better than a 9/11-truther. After all, 9/11-truthers manufacture evidence, whereas I demand it.

Is it unreasonable to ask questions? If not, why impugn those who do?

  • Who bears responsibility for validating the natural born status of presidential candidates? Congress? States? The secret service?
  • If a state passed a law that effectively redefined "natural born citizen," wouldn't that violate the fourteenth amendment? Isn't that what the state of Hawaii has done by issuing COLB's instead of doctor-signed birth certificates?
  • Why wouldn't Barry-O release the birth certificate to smear us?

I highly recommend Barry Farber's perspective on this issue.
