Obama Caught In Lie About Earmarks

Today Obama announced...

Done right, earmarks have given legislators the opportunity to direct federal money to worthy projects that benefit people in their district, and that's why I have opposed their outright elimination.

But.

You can't get any more context than this. Listen to as much as you can stomach, then jump to 2:10 where Obama unequivocally states "My recovery and reinvestment plan will have...will set a new standard of accountability, transparency, and oversight. We are going to ban all earmarks, the process by which individual members insert pet projects without review."

Some on the left have argued he meant the ban only applied to the recovery and reinvestment package. First of all, the recover and reinvestment package was laden with earmarks. Second of all, it wouldn't be much of a standard if the ban applied to only one bill. He said he was going to ban all earmarks. But now he thinks they're a good idea. Why?

Obama Budget Lacks Votes For Passage

He needs them to pass his own pork-laden boondoggle.

Update

Obama originally described earmarks as "the process by which individual members insert pet projects without review."

He subsequently said "Done right, earmarks have given legislators the opportunity to direct federal money to worthy projects that benefit people in their district."

I therefore draw the conclusion that he believes "Done right, the insertion of pet projects without review gives members the opportunity to direct federal money to worthy projects that benefit people in their district."
